Rolls Royce Born In A Manchester Hotel

Did you know that the idea of Rolls Royce was conceived in 1904, over lunch in a Manchester Hotel. The meeting involved an engineer called Henry Edmunds, Charles Rolls who was an avid motorcar fan and Henry Royce, who was also a successful engineer and had been making plans for a new prototype car. Henry Edmunds had a feeling that the meeting between Rolls and Royce would be productive and at the end of the meeting it was agreed that C.S Rolls and Co, would be the only car dealership to sell the vehicle which Royce would produce. By 1904 Royce had designed and built his first of three prototype motor car engine, which hit the road that year.

Royce went on to design the 40/50 HP motorcar, which was introduced in 1907. It was decided that the 40/50HP was to be used as a demonstrator vehicle to show the world, what a great car it was. The chosen vehicle was the 12th 40/50HP to roll off the production line and was painted aluminium silver, with silver-plated fittings. The vehicle was notably quiet in comparison to the competition and was nicknamed the "Silver Ghost". The name stuck and it was during this year that the vehicle proved what a reliable car it was, by completing a return, London to Glasgow journey 27 times. At the time, this was a phenomenal achievement and it was in 1907 that the publication Autocar, described the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost as the "best car in the world", which is a term that has been associated with Rolls Royce even to this day.

Over the years Rolls Royce has continued to build luxury vehicles, many of which have gone on to become stars in the movies, such as the Rolls Royce Phantom III, which appeared in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. In the movie, the bad guy Auric Goldfinger, employs Odd Job, who memorably uses his top hat to decapitate a statue, to be his own private chauffeur and bodyguard.

The modern fleet of Rolls Royce vehicles are still associated with reliability and prestige and have remained a firm favourite with rock stars, business tycoons or for use as wedding cars. The latest vehicles to roll off the production line are the Rolls Royce Ghost and Rolls Royce Phantom. We are fortunate at Midlands Limo Hire to have the Rolls Royce Phantom for hire. With a top speed of 149 mph and a 453bhp, whisper quiet V12 engine, the new phantom is simply an awe-ispiring motorcar. The Phantom is a unique and contemporary vehicle, yet is still in keeping with the Rolls Royce tradition of timeless quality.
