History Of the Wedding Bouquet.

Weddings are full of traditions, such as the wearing of a white wedding dress, something old something new or tossing the bouquet to a bunch of guests and the female guest who catches it is said to be the next to marry.

But do you know where this tossing of the bouquet tradition originates from? Well it is believed that the wedding bouquet could be traced back to Roman times, when a bride and groom would wear fragrant grains and herbs, such as garlic, around the neck to ward off evil spirits that were thought to bring bad luck. But, who wants to wear smelly garlic around their neck on their wedding day? Overtime, the herbs were replaced with pleasant smelling flowers, which were thought of as a symbol of fertility, love and happiness.

In the past, it was believed that the bride must be quite lucky, after all she was the one getting married. So guests used to chase the bride, to try to tear an item of clothing from her and hence gain some of her good fortune. Unsurprisingly, this didn't go down to well with the bride, so it was decided that she would hurl a bouquet of flowers over her shoulder, which would distract the guests, so that the bride could make her exit in one piece.

Choosing the perfect wedding bouquet can be a bit of a dilemma for a bride and it seems a shame to simply toss away the bouquet. So nowadays, you will often find that the bride has a smaller bouquet of flowers made by the florist and it is this miniature bouquet that is used to toss over her shoulder, leaving the bride with her original bouquet as a memoir of the big day.
